Bess was a mortal woman, killed in the fallout of a fight between others. In a flashback to the 19th century, Duncan MacLeod was in mid-dalliance with Bess Perry when her fiancé, Ned Bascombe, arrived with a drawn sword. She off-handedly dismissed their betrothal as only her parents idea, but Ned challenged MacLeod immediately, and the two men fought as Bess tried to stop them. When MacLeod said for her to stay back, Ned whirled and accidentally ran her through. She collapsed and died in MacLeod's arms.
Ned appeared at her funeral in chains in police custody, MacLeod however, took the brunt of her parents grief, her mother wailing that it was he who should be dead. He promised they would have anything they needed of him, she slapped him and asked if he could bring her only child back.
