Gregory Widen is an American screenwriter and director. In 1985, while still an undergraduate, he sold his university thesis screenplay, "Shadow Clan", for $500,000. The script would become the basis of the movie Highlander. He is also known creating the The Prophecy franchise.

Education[]
Widen attended Saddleback College. Later he switched to studying screenwriting at UCLA. During this time he payed for UCLA by working as a firefighter.
Career[]
After Highlander, Widen worked as one of the writers on the Weekend War 1988 telefilm. Inspired by his own experiences as a firefighter, Widen wrote the screenplay for Backdraft, which was released in 1991 to critical acclaim. In 1993, he wrote an episode of Space Rangers and wrote and directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt. In 1995 Widen directed his first feature, The Prophecy.
Widen returned to television in 1999 and created Rescue 77, a series about the professional and personal lives of paramedics in Los Angeles. The series lasted only 8 episodes. His last credit was the 2000 telefim Green Sails, on which he was the writer and executive producer.
In 2011, it was announced that Widen was adapting the graphic novel Ascend into a screenplay with producer Stephen L'Heureux.[1]
