Areshanti travelled the world, meeting other Immortals. He later meets his first student, Carter Wellan, who becomes his best friend.

Added by Africanmwesi7After the quickening, Clay taunts Duncan, asking if Duncan is scared, and says he has something for him, Ashe's sword. He swings it around, and Duncan shrinks back, shouting that they're on holy ground. Clay drives the sword into a piece of wood behind him, and says he hasn't come for Duncan, unless he wants to step off holy ground. As Clay and Carter ride away, Clay says, "A coward who runs for sanctuary is not worth my time or effort." He then shouts over his shoulder, telling him that they'll be at a certain inn that night, "if your knees ever stop shaking."
Around the year 1996, Haresh is in Seacouver visiting Carter. He goes to a bar where he is supposed to meet him, but the bartender there tells him that he left moments ago with another man. That man happened to be Richie Ryan, who had challenged Carter to a fight. Richie wins and recives Carter's quickening. Just as Richie leaves, Clay arrives only to see his best friend dead and Richie riding away; he vow to kill the bastard. Clay follows Richie.
At his place, Richie senses him. Clay kicks through the door without even bothering to try to open it. He goes after Richie in a complete rage, yelling and screaming and slashing wildly, but still good enough that when Richie manages to get his hands on his own sword, Clay's first blow breaks it cleanly in half. Richie takes a dive out the window and gets away on his bike. Later, Richie breaks into a museum, specifically, a "Masterworks of the Forge" exhibit. He finally finds a sword that he likes, then he feels another Immortal. He breaks the glass, setting off the alarm, but can't get the blade free of the display even then. Clay comes in, saying he knew Richie would have to show up sooner or later. Richie says he's not armed and asks where the honor is in this.
Clay: "I didn't come for your honor, boy. I came for your head."
When Clay tells Richie he's going to kill him for revenge, Richie says he doesn't even know him.
Clay: "You didn't know Carter Wellan when you killed him."
Richie: "Ah, you must mean Leather Boy..."
Clay attacks, and Richie dodges and runs out just as the police drive up. "You got me..." he says, and lets the cops take him away while Clay watches. Duncan later pays for his bail and the two fix their relationship and go to find Clay. Joe gives them Clay's address. Richie drives off first on his bike, with Duncan following. Clay is kneeling by the grave, his head in his hands. He looks up as the two arrive. Duncan still tries to talk Richie out of it. Richie follows him to where Clay is waiting. Clay says his fight is with Richie, adding that Richie had no quarrel with Carter. Duncan replies that Clay had no quarrel with Ashe. Clay asks if Duncan condones what Richie did; Duncan tells him it is what Immortals do. Richie offers to fight; Clay says when he's ready and walks away from the cemetery. Richie starts after him, but Duncan stops him. He tells Richie of how Clay shamed him after killing Ashe and how he must avenge him. Richie understands and steps aside and tells Duncan not to lose.
Duncan and Clay meet just off the cemetary and fight. They give each other minor wounds, then, after a lengthy exchange of blows, Duncan runs Clay through and gets his sword. Duncan offers to let Clay walk, but he refuses and accepts his death. Duncan raises his sword, hesitates, then takes his head. As he gets the Quickening, the sky turns to night. The field is across the bay from the city, and the stars and lights from the city show up, then fade back to day. After the Quickening, Duncan kneels and looks at Clay's body, then picks up his sword and raises it over his head, then thrusts it into the ground.
Quotes
Edit
- "Do you know what it's like to have a friend for 900 years?" (looks at Duncan sadly) "I've known him longer than you've been alive. He was my squire, and my companion on one hundred campaigns in five continents. Now he is gone." (looks at Richie) "Because of you."
