Duncan MacLeod, The Highlander, thinks he might be drawn into a conspiracy of Immortals on a militant quest to win back the independence that Scotland lost, centuries ago, at Culloden. Immortal Annie Devlin has already answered the ancient call of the clans. But if Duncan follows, he risks being drawn into a web of obsession, madness, and murder.

The Highland Shakespeare Company comes to town, commanded by a giant of an Immortal named James Douglas, who sends his supposedly pre-Immortal student to spy and leave intriguing presents that send Duncan MacLeod back in memory to Culloden. Joe is attacked, and Annie framed for it. Her Watcher reveals her identity to the papers, but Annie thinks it was Mac who did that. Duncan is forced to take her head, and then discovers it was all a setup by Douglas, who wants his. it's madness, revenge...insanity. Douglas has a history of taking heads... after he shoots the victim through the spine, stabs him through the chest, and/or drags to death. He wants Duncan MacLeod.

As stated in the summary, Annie Devlin, from the season 2 episode An Eye for an Eye makes an appearance in this novel.
