Synopsis[]
In the continuation of the Kalas cycle, Duncan has retreated to Paris after Anne witnessed his 'death' and meets Hugh Fitzcairn. Fitz tells him he is madly in love with Naomi, a fellow culinary instructor at Le Cordon Bleu, but her ex-boyfriend Patrick is determined to win her back no matter how he has to get Fitz out of the way.
In flashback to 1637 Verona, Fitz is pursuing the daughter of Duncan's employer, and Duncan is ordered keep the girl chaste. Fitz eventually informed him his job was over before it started - the girl had taught him a few things.
Meanwhile, Kalas has followed Duncan to Paris, continuing his plan to break down Duncan by hurting the people he cares about. Kalas uses Patrick as a pawn to frame Fitz, and destroy his life with Naomi.
